Plans
A group looking to honor the memory of Ridgewood High School graduate Tyler Clementi is planning to walk across the George Washington Bridge on Oct. 16—marking with an act of remembrance the spot where he ended his life. And one of the organizers says the sentiment behind the event is connecting strongly with people in Ridgewood and all over the world.
Clementi, a Rutgers freshman, killed himself after his roommate and another Rutgers student allegedly streamed video over the Internet of him having sexual relations with another man. The two have been charged with invading Clementi's privacy, though prosecutors haven't yet said if elevated charges may be brought as well. The "A Rose for Tyler" tribute walk is being organized by Stefanie Cronin and Sommer Sheikh, and details are provided at a Facebook page dedicated to the event. Participants will gather at the New Jersey side of the bridge at 9:15 a.m., and start their walk at 10 a.m. They'll each bring a single rose to be thrown into the Hudson River halfway through the walk, and pause for a moment of silence. Sheikh said she didn't know Clementi—but his story hit home. She and Cronin both are Bergen
County residents, and Sheikh is a Rutgers graduate. Hearing about Clementi's death, she said, was "unnerving."page dedicated to the event.
